FAQs

The Language Centre is following government and University regulations and guidelines regarding managing risks associated with the Coronavirus pandemic. A risk assessment has been undertaken and signed off by the Academic Registrar.

When you arrive at the Language Centre:

1. Please use the QR code at reception to scan yourself in using the NHS Covid-19 app

2. Please follow all signage - there are one-way and give-way systems in place

3. Please use the hand sanitisers provided at the entrance and on each floor

4. Classroom windows will be open to aid ventilation. Please therefore bring warm layers with you as required

5. You must follow all verbal and written instructions provided by your tutor or the administrative staff

6. Please be considerate to other learners and staff - making sure you give way on the stairs, for example, and dispersing from classrooms in an orderly and timely fashion

7. You are strongly encouraged to wear a face covering while moving about the building or when sitting in shared spaces (other than classrooms)

This guidance will be monitored regularly and updated as required.

We operate a waiting list system. If you join the waiting list, you will be contacted by email if a space on a course becomes available due to a cancellation, and sent instructions on how to pay. The waiting list works on a strictly first-come-first-served basis, so a spare place will be offered to the first person on the waiting list first. We monitor waiting lists and are sometimes able to create an additional course if there are enough people interested.

Alternatively you may be able to enrol on one of the intensive courses we offer that run from Weeks 8-10 each term.

If you don't have an Oxford University SSO (Single Sign-On) then please contact the admin team directly on admin@ox.ac.uk with your details and details of the course on which you would like enrol. If you have an Oxford SSO but are unable to log in, please speak to your IT officer or admin team to get your SSO identity.

Please make sure that your browser's pop-up blocker is not enabled. If your browser is preventing pop-ups, you will not be able to complete the payment process, because the payment screen needs to open in a new, pop-up window.

Please note that the default fee in the booking system is the STAFF fee. If you are a student, the system will recognise this from your SSO before you get to the payment screen, and the price will auto-correct.

This information is for students.

General and Academic courses

If you need languages for your studies, you can apply for Priority Funding from your college (for undergraduates) or department/faculty (for postgraduates). This support will usually cover the full fee. Details about the Priority Funding scheme can be found under the timetables on each individual language webpage.

Fast Track courses

Colleges will consider refunding up to half the Fast Track course fees on completion of the course at the end of Trinity term. Please contact your college about this when you start your course. Details about the Fast Track Partial Reimbursement scheme can be found under the timetables on each individual language webpage.

All language learners present different learner profiles and have different strengths – not everybody in your class will be at exactly the same level. If you feel that you are not in the right level – please speak to your tutor in the first week.

Whether you are having difficulties attending classes, finding the time to study or struggling with a particular aspect of language learning, you should raise this with your tutor. You can send them an email or contact them via Canvas. Your tutor will be best placed to give you advice and support. This may be in the form of specific resources on Canvas, additional exercises, and specific strategies. The Language Centre facilitates a Language Exchange scheme through which all our learners can get further support from native speakers.

This depends on the course you are attending – all learners who have attended 80% of classes can be issued with a certificate of course attendance (upon request) at the end of the term / course. All Modern Languages courses also include optional in-class assessments which will give you the opportunity, if you pass them, to receive an additional completion certificate at the corresponding CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Language) level of competence. Full details can be found in our course handbooks.

Please see our terms and conditions. Please refer to points 14 - 21 for information about cancellations.

Your Oxford SSO (Single Sign-On) will determine which fee you are charged e.g. student, staff fee etc.

The default fee in the booking system is the STAFF fee. As you progress through the check-out process, the system recognises your status from your SSO and if you are a student, the fee will auto-correct before you get to the payment screen. Please therefore proceed through the booking process in order for this auto-correct to take place.

Yes, we are in an Eduroam zone for students and staff; other visitors can log in to Sky WiFi.

We provide water fountains and cups, but please bring your own water bottle to be environmentally friendly. There are no other drinks or food available to purchase. You are welcome to consume your own food and drink in the seating in the open area on the ground floor, but we ask that only water in sealed containers is taken into the classrooms.

Temporary restrictions on gathering (and eating/drinking) in shared spaces may be in place as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. Please make sure you follow all instructions.
