Japanese Placement Test 2

(for students whose score was 56-60 in Placement Test 1)

Students who would like to take General Stage 5 are required to take another placement test developed by Tsukuba University (TTBJ). The purpose of this placement test is to assess the student’s ability and to decide whether the student belongs to the lower Intermediate level, which is what General Stage 5 is aimed at.  Please read the following instructions.

What is TTBJ?
TTBJ is a collection of tests developed by the International Student Centre at the University of Tsukuba, Japan.

For individual test takers
Individual test takers take the TTBJ in order to check their own Japanese proficiency. In this case, individuals must apply to take the test for themselves. The procedure is easy. It is free of charge.

How to do this 
Open the link http://ttbj-tsukuba.org/mt/p2_e.html => Click “Individual Test Takers’ button => Read carefully the explanations about the test => Click “Individual Application” button and apply for the test => At the “Selection of test to be taken” section, please select the following three buttons: Spot Test, Kanji Spot Test and Grammar Test. Click Next=>From “Entry of applicant information” onwards, follow the instructions on the screen to complete these three tests.

  • Spot Test will take 10 – 15 minutes to complete
  • Kanji Spot Test will take 30-60 minutes to complete, depending on how fast you can answer the questions
  • Grammar Test will take 15-30 minutes to complete

When you have completed your test
Please download the test scores as PDF documents and send them to Keiko Harada at keiko.harada@orinst.ox.ac.uk. She will email you whether you will be able to take General Stage 5 class or whether you should join Fast Track Stage 4+5.
