Courses Overview

French is a very popular language at Oxford University and it is available at all levels on all pathways. Please find below some key features of each pathway. If you would like further information, then please watch our "How to Choose your Pathway" video, or consult the handbooks below.

General Pathway


  • Wide variety of Stages available, from beginners up
  • Term by term commitment
  • Taught in weeks 2-7 every term (part 1 in Michaelmas, part 2 in Hilary and part 3 in Trinity)
  • Classes per week: 1 
  • Length of class: 2 hours
  • Total hours of tuition per term: 12 
  • Expected hours of self-guided study learning outside the classroom (supported by Canvas, the University’s new Virtual Learning Environment): 12
  • Most popular courses are also available in a Week 9 Intensive format 
  • Entry: first-come, first-served
  • Fully-funded Priority places available for students sponsored by their college/department (see Priority Funding box on this page for further information)
  • Certificates of course completion and attendance are available, please see the course handbook for conditions

Fast Track Pathway


  • Ideal for learners motivated to learn faster
  • Taught throughout the academic year in weeks: 2 – 8 in Michaelmas, 1 – 8 In Hilary and Trinity, with entry points at the start of Michaelmas and Hilary
  • Classes per week: 2
  • Length of class: 2 hours + 1 hour – sessions are usually scheduled in the evenings
  • Total hours of tuition per term: 21 in Michaelmas, 24 each in Hilary and Trinity
  • Expected hours of self-guided study learning outside the classroom (supported by Canvas, the University’s new Virtual Learning Environment): 21 in Michaelmas, 24 each in Hilary and Trinity
  • Total hours of tuition per year: 69 (or 48 for the two term version)
  • Enrolment and fee is for the academic year
  • Entry: first-come, first-served
  • College partial reimbursement scheme available (see Fast Track partial reimbursement scheme on this page for further information, or read our Fast Track handbook)
  • Certificates of course completion and attendance are available, please see the course handbook for conditions

Guide to our Stages

Stage CEFR pre-course requirement Equivalence in classroom learning only
1 None No prior experience of learning the language
2 A1 A 30-40 hour course - a very rusty GCSE
3 A2 Two years totalling at least 80 hours of courses - a good but rusty GCSE
4 B1 Three years totalling at least 120 hours - a recent GCSE with a high grade
5 B1+ Four years totalling at least 160 hours - a rusty A-Level
6 B2 Five years totalling over 200 hours - a recent A-Level
7 B2+ Over 6 years and continued regular practice. This is stage is also perfect for those who wish to maintain a near-native level of competence
