Course overview

The 1-to-1 Academic Writing Tutorials allow you and your tutor to discuss the most effective ways for you to improve as an academic writer. These tutorials give you the opportunity to ask specific questions and receive personalised feedback on a particular piece of written work, or to simply discuss recurring problems you have with your writing. 

Your tutor will be able to answer questions and offer feedback on the following aspects of academic writing: task achievement, organisation, source-use, citation, style, syntax and language. 

Learners will normally submit a short piece of written work prior to their tutorial. Your tutor may provide some written comments that they wish to discuss in greater detail during the tutorial. These comments will be available for you to view both during and following the tutorial.

Signing up for this tutorial-based ‘course’ entitles you to two 30-minute 1-to-1 Academic Writing Tutorials per term (Weeks 2-8), subject to availability. 

Tutorials are only offered to students and academic staff of the University. They are not available to non-academic staff, or to alumni or members of the general public. 

Terms and Conditions*

1.    Up to 70 places on the 1:1 Academic Writing Tutorials are available in the first instance.

2.    It is your responsibility to arrange your tutorial times (details on how to do this through Canvas will be sent to you after enrolment). 

3.    No refunds will be given for unused slots.

4.    You are entitled to two tutorials per term (Weeks 2-8), subject to availability.

5.    We advise early booking of slots in Canvas, so that you can book times that suit you and your academic schedule.

6.    Each tutorial is self-contained and can therefore be with any of the tutors who teach these tutorials: you may not necessarily be allocated the same tutor for each of your tutorials.

7.    These tutorials are only offered to students and academic staff of the University. They are not available to non-academic staff, or to alumni or members of the general public.
