Language Centre Library

The Language Centre has one of the largest collection of materials for language learning in the UK. The library is a lending library with the exception of class textbooks and reference books. All prospective members must go on a tour (10 am, 2 pm weekdays)

The Library is on the Language Centre Blog you can find the latest acquisitions on LibraryThing, news on Netvibes and updates on Twitter and Facebook. A library guide is also available. All material can be searched on SOLO, the Oxford University Library Catalogue

Currently there are 200 languages but the collection expands every year as new languages are added, often on request. The collection consists of:

  • Reference material (dictionaries, grammars, vocabulary builders). Textbooks with audio-visual material. Other books (readers, phonetics, literature)
  • Magazines, newspapers (list in the library guide), information about language courses
  • Videos: a large stock of foreign language and English films, documentaries and video textbooks (list on Excel) including the Eurecap collection of films with same language subtitles
  • Study booths with computers with networked CD-ROMs and satellite television in 16 languages, Meeting Room, and the Language Links pages
  • Special collections: LSP (Language for Specific Purposes), Graphic Novels, Languages of India linguistics, the Lambda library for French and German literature, the Pl√©iade collection, language teaching methodology
  • Modern Languages Final examinations since 1978 (Listening Comprehension, Discourse Topics). These examinations are not on OXAM but a selection is available on WebLearn
