Courses at the Language Centre

We offer three main programmes of language courses: Languages for Study and Research (LASR), the Oxford Programme in Languages (OPAL) and English for Academic Studies (EAS).

The LASR programme provides courses in ten languages for members of Oxford University: French, Georgian, German, Chinese, Modern Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Welsh. The emphasis is on general communication and most courses last for the entire academic year. Those with proven academic need for classes are given priority.

There are OPAL courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Italian, Russian and Spanish. This early evening programme (Mon-Thu 18.00-20.00, Fri 17.00-19.00) is intended for those who are highly motivated, willing to commit to a fast-paced course and wish to obtain a certificate of achievement.

The EAS programme is intended for Oxford University international students and staff whose first language is not English and who require English language support for their academic studies and life at Oxford. There are courses in Academic Writing and Advanced Communication Skills, and a course for spouses of University Members.

Lambda Project

The Lambda Project offers a programme of independent learning in French or German with language adviser support.

For those who wish to study a language at their own pace, the Language Centre has a large library and self-study area. Class textbooks are presented in the Language Centre Blog on LibraryThing. The library has language-learning materials in 190 languages to help you with your research reading, professional exchanges abroad and holiday trips.
