This addition is the fruit of a collaborative initiative between Prof Jieun Kiaer, Professor of Korean linguistics in the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and Marion Sadoux, Head of Modern Languages at the Language Centre. The course will be taught by current DPhil students who are focusing their research on the teaching of Korean and the course contents will be developed with Professor Kiaer’s guidance and expertise. A unique opportunity for our learners and a rare moment when research, theory and practice in language learning come together.
Why Korean?
The Korean language, with its unique script, Hangeul, offers an exciting opportunity to explore one of the most dynamic and culturally rich countries in the world. For fans of K-culture, learning Korean opens the door to a deeper understanding of the music, drama, cinema, literature, and even the cuisine that have captivated global audiences. With bands like BTS, BLACKPINK, and New Jeans, films such as Parasite, Minari, and Past Lives, and series like Squid Game, Korea’s influence on global culture continues to grow. By learning Korean, you can connect more intimately with these cultural phenomena and appreciate their nuances in the original language.
However, the appeal of Korean goes far beyond pop culture. Korea’s significance on the global stage—whether in politics, economics, technology, or culture—makes the language a valuable tool for anyone looking to broaden their horizons. Understanding Korean provides deeper insights into a nation that is at the forefront of innovation and global dialogue. Whether you are studying humanities, social sciences, sciences, or any other field at Oxford, learning Korean can enrich your academic journey and open new avenues for exploration and engagement.
For the Oxford community—students, staff, and alumni—studying Korean is not just about learning a language; it's about connecting with a vibrant culture and gaining a new perspective on the world. Whether you’re drawn by the allure of K-pop, and Korean cinema, or simply the desire to engage with a country that is shaping global trends, Korean is your gateway to a deeper understanding of a rapidly evolving nation.
