Designing Pedagogically Sound Listening Materials with AI (Higher Education)

Participants will begin by reflecting on their own listening materials and challenges, before revisiting what listening activities are actually for: developing competence, supporting learning, and enabling meaningful engagement with language. Through guided tasks, they will design a pedagogically grounded “listening brief” tailored to their learners, and use AI tools to generate, evaluate, and refine listening scripts and audio.

The session includes practical exploration of AI-assisted scripting and text-to-speech tools, with a strong emphasis on maintaining authenticity, appropriate difficulty, and pedagogical purpose. Throughout, participants will critically assess where AI adds value—and where teacher expertise remains essential.

By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a ready-to-use listening activity adapted to their context, along with a clearer framework for integrating AI into listening pedagogy through principled alignments.

Pre-session preparation (15–20 minutes): Participants will be asked to share and reflect on one listening activity they would like to improve and have the opportunity to view pre workshop materials and to interact with other participants (Canvas page)
