Frequently Asked Questions

We operate a waiting list system. If you join the waiting list, you will be contacted by email if a space on a course becomes available due to a cancellation, and sent instructions on how to pay. The waiting list works on a strictly first-come-first-served basis, so a spare place will be offered to the first person on the waiting list first. We monitor waiting lists and are sometimes able to create an additional course if there are enough people interested.

Alternatively you may be able to enrol on one of the intensive courses we offer that run from Weeks 9&10 each term.

If you don't have an Oxford University SSO (Single Sign-On) then please contact the admin team directly on admin@lang.ox.ac.uk with your details and details of the course on which you would like enrol. If you have an Oxford SSO but are unable to log in, please speak to your IT officer or admin team to get your SSO identity.

Please make sure that your browser's pop-up blocker is not enabled. If your browser is preventing pop-ups, you will not be able to complete the payment process, because the payment screen needs to open in a new, pop-up window.

General and Academic courses

If you need languages for your studies, you can apply for Priority Funding from your college (for undergraduates) or department/faculty (for postgraduates). This support will usually cover the full fee. Details about the Priority Funding scheme can be found under the timetables on each individual language webpage.

All language learners present different learner profiles and have different strengths – not everybody in your class will be at exactly the same level. If you feel that you are not in the right level – please speak to your tutor in the first week.

Whether you are having difficulties attending classes, finding the time to study or struggling with a particular aspect of language learning, you should raise this with your tutor. You can send them an email or contact them via Canvas. Your tutor will be best placed to give you advice and support. This may be in the form of specific resources on Canvas, additional exercises, and specific strategies. The Language Centre facilitates a Language Exchange scheme through which all our learners can get further support from native speakers.

Your Oxford SSO (Single Sign-On) will determine which fee you are charged e.g. student, staff fee etc.

The default fee in CoSy is the STAFF fee. As you progress through the check-out process, the system recognises your status from your SSO and if you are a student, the fee will auto-correct before you get to the payment screen. Please therefore proceed through the booking process in order for this auto-correct to take place.

Yes, we are in an Eduroam zone for students and staff; other visitors can log in to Sky WiFi (_TheCloud).

We provide water fountains and cups, but please bring your own water bottle to be environmentally friendly. There is also a machine dispensing hot drinks. You are welcome to consume your own food and drink in the seating in the open area on the ground floor, but we ask that only water in sealed containers is taken into the classrooms.
