Modern Languages Intensive Beginner Courses
Information about the Language Centre's out-of-term intensive Modern Languages courses
Course format
We offer Intensive beginner courses during Weeks 8, 9 & 10 of Michaelmas and Hilary term. Delivery is over three weeks and includes two 90 minute sessions per week, guided independent learning, communicative tasks, and activities with feedback using the University's Virtual Learning Environment, Canvas.
Enrolment for Hilary term Intensive Beginners' courses will open on 15 February 2024
Language Level Evaluation pages will also reopen on 15 February. These will be a shortened version of the test to help differentiate beginners between Stage 1 Part 1 and Stage 1 Part 2, for those who are unsure about which class to join. The full Language Level assessments for Trinity Term will open again at a later date. Please join our mailing list to be kept up to date with course availability and enrolment dates.
Enrolment on Part 2
If you have studied the language before, you are welcome to enrol on Part 2 of the course, without having taken Part 1. Please complete a Language Level Evaluation before you enrol, so that our tutors can advise you of the most appropriate Part for you to join.
Only complete beginners must start with Stage 1 Part 1.

Enrolment
For Learners with an Oxford University SSO (Single Sign-On) simply click on the enrol button next to the class that you wish to join.
For Learners without an Oxford University SSO, or who are not members of the University, please email admin@lang.ox.ac.uk with the following details:
- Full name
- Email address and phone number
- The name of the course you wish to study (including Stage and Part)
- The start date and time of the course
- Your connection to Oxford University, if any (to determine course fee)
We will then provisionally enrol you onto the course and send you a link to the Oxford University Online Store for payment. Once payment is received we will confirm your place on the course.
Enrolment will close at 12 noon on Thursday 29 February 2024 (7th Week).
A note on the timetables
A Stage is made up of three Parts, usually Part 1 is Michaelmas term, Part 2 is Hilary term and Part 3 is Trinity term. Please note, complete beginners (Stage 1) cannot join Parts 2 or 3 if they have not completed Part 1.

Intensive course structure
- Course duration: 3 weeks
- When: Weeks -3, -2 & -1 of Michaelmas term; Weeks 8, 9 & 10 of Michaelmas and Hilary terms
- Class frequency: 2 per week
- Length of class: 90 minutes
- Online learning pathway study: 3-4 hours per week
- Self-study and practice time: 4 hours per week
