English for Partners

Course overview

These courses are intended for any partners of University staff or students (who are not members of the University in their own right), whose level is CEFR B1 or above (intermediate). There are two levels – intermediate and advanced. The aims of this course are: 

  • to improve your general confidence, fluency and accuracy in English 
  • to develop the language and skills needed in a range of everyday situations
  • to increase your vocabulary (and for advanced; develop your awareness of different registers in English)
  • to improve your pronunciation 
  • to revise and extend essential areas of grammar 
  • to give you guidance on using resources to improve your English outside class (books, CDs, TV and radio, the Internet and the Language Centre Library) 
  • to discuss a range of topics including life in Britain, life in your own countries, and other topics of interest to the class 

Learning outcomes

  • Increase your fluency in English on a range of topics 
  • Learn more about life in Britain and Oxford 
  • Have an awareness of how to function in certain social situations
  • Revise some basic grammatical areas, and worked on your own accuracy, gaining an awareness of errors you commonly make 
  • Increase your vocabulary on selected topics and everyday situations, and have a better understanding of how vocabulary functions in English 
  • Have a better understanding of certain areas of English pronunciation and have practised listening for gist and detail 

A certificate of attendance is available upon request if you have attended at least 80% of the course
